Where to base yourself
The Peak District and Derbyshire are the big draw. Britain’s first national park was designated in 1951 and covers 555 square miles across five counties. The Derbyshire side has Kinder Scout, the highest point at 636 metres, and the Monsal Trail, 8.5 miles of old railway with a viaduct and six tunnels.
The Lincolnshire Wolds are rolling hills and hidden valleys between Lincoln and the coast. Most of the area has been protected since 1973.
The Lincolnshire coast runs from the Humber to the Wash, with Skegness and Mablethorpe as the main resorts. Every November and December, grey seals come ashore at Donna Nook to have their pups.
Sherwood Forest is in Nottinghamshire, near Edwinstowe, and the RSPB manages the nature reserve. Its most famous tree, the Major Oak, still stands. It produced no leaves in 2026 and is thought to have reached the end of its life.
Rutland is England’s smallest county, according to its tourist board. Rutland Water sits in the middle of it, and the same board describes it as the largest man made lake in England by surface area.
Stars from the tub
This isn’t the region for it, and we’d rather say so. DarkSky International lists no certified dark sky place in any of the six counties. The Peak District has three Dark Sky Discovery Sites, at Surprise View, Parsley Hay and Minninglow, though the park authority’s own report says the Peak District has no pristine dark skies.
If stars are the point of the trip, look at North Yorkshire or Wales.
When to go
The Peak District welcomes more than 13 million people a year, according to the park authority. Our view is that midweek is the time to go. The Lincolnshire coast makes a good winter trip, because the seals arrive after the summer crowds have gone.
Getting there
The M1 runs up through the region past Leicester, Nottingham and Derby, and the A1 runs parallel further east. Trainline puts the fastest train from London St Pancras to Derby at 1 hour and 24 minutes, with an average a little over two hours.
Good to know
The six counties are Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Booking sites carve them up differently. Holidu has one page for the whole of the East Midlands. Sykes lists by area, so we link to its Lincolnshire results and its Peak District and Derbyshire results separately.
The national park also reaches into Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, so a stay sold as Peak District may not be in Derbyshire at all.
