Where to base yourself
Exmoor is the wild end. The national park covers 267 square miles and 71% of it lies in Somerset, with the rest in Devon. Dunkery Beacon, the highest point, stands at 519 metres, and the park has 37 miles of coast.
The Quantock Hills were England’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956. The whole range is one narrow ridge about 19 kilometres long, so nowhere on it is far from anywhere else.
The Mendip Hills rise out of the Levels in the north of the county. Cheddar Gorge cuts into them, and the National Trust calls it England’s largest gorge, at almost 400 feet deep and three miles long. Wells, at the foot of the hills, is widely known as England’s smallest city.
The Levels and Moors are the flat middle. Somerset Wildlife Trust puts some of the land at around two metres above sea level and some as low as 0.2 metres. Glastonbury Tor stands over it all, with a 15th century tower on top.
Stars from the tub
Exmoor was named Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve in 2011, and the park authority holds a Dark Skies Festival each autumn. The 2026 festival is the tenth. If stars are the reason for the trip, we’d book on the moor and leave the Levels for another time.
When to go
Winter needs a little care on the Levels. Flooding can cover large areas there, depending on the rain and the tides, so ask the site about the road in before you book between November and March.
Late June needs care too. Glastonbury Festival takes over Worthy Farm, and the next one runs from 23 to 27 June 2027. If you’re not going, pick another week.
Getting there
The M5 runs through the middle of the county, past Bridgwater and Taunton. Visit Somerset puts the train from London Paddington to Taunton at under two hours.
For Exmoor, the West Somerset Railway is a heritage steam line that runs 20 miles from Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton, to Minehead. Minehead is also where the South West Coast Path starts its 630 miles.
Good to know
Exmoor is shared with Devon, and booking sites don’t always respect the border. The Somerset search on holidaycottages.co.uk included a few stays in Devon when we looked.
Sykes and Hoseasons had only a handful of hot tub glamping stays in Somerset between them, which is why we don’t link to them here.
