Where to base yourself
The South Downs are chalk hills that run the width of the county. Open ridges, long views to the sea and villages tucked into the folds below.
The High Weald, to the north and east, is the opposite. Small fields, old woods and sunken lanes. The countryside around Battle and Hastings sells itself as 1066 Country, for the obvious reason.
The coast has sand dunes at Camber, white cliffs at the Seven Sisters and a wide sandy beach at West Wittering. Brighton is in the middle if you want a night out.
Stars from the tub
The South Downs National Park has been an International Dark Sky Reserve since 2016. That’s remarkable for somewhere this close to London. Choose a pod on the Downs or in the Weald, away from the coastal towns, and you’ll see far more than you would at home.
When to go
Sussex works all year. It’s one of the warmer, sunnier parts of England and the vineyards here make it a good autumn trip, when many of them open for tours and tastings. Weekends go first because London is so close. Midweek is far easier to book.
Getting there
Trains run from London to Brighton, Lewes and Chichester, and plenty of sites are a short taxi ride from a station. By road it’s the M23 and A23 south, then the A27 along the coast, which is slow at busy times.
Good to know
With so few hot tub stays listed, flexibility helps. Search a few dates either side of the one you want. If nothing comes up, Norfolk is the other region on this site that works for a short trip from the south east.
